Unexpected Good Deeds
The story of Janet and our team member, Ken.
Due to a system glitch, Ken, a member of Team Fern, ended up on the wrong street and knocked on a screen door he wasn’t supposed to be at and heard someone struggling. He yelled inside to see if help was needed and it was. When he entered the apartment, he found Janet on the floor unable to get up with her phone out of reach. Ken helped her up and learned that she had been on the floor for over 30 minutes. He stayed with her until her caregiver arrived. While they waited, Janet talked about how impressed she was with Fern and all the work she has done for the community. Ken left after making sure she was okay with the promise to return with a yard sign for her.
Fern made it a priority to meet with her and to thank her for her support as well as to check on her. Upon meeting Janet, Fern saw immediately that she had untreated lymphedema.
Since Fern worked on getting the Lymphedema Treatment Act into law, she was able to tell Janet that the compression garments she needed to treat the condition were now covered by insurance and she was thrilled to learn it.
Fern knew that she needed additional supports and offered to contact the Area Agency on Aging to see about getting her more help. They stayed and chatted with her for a while about how serendipitous this entire event was. She was very excited and grateful to meet Fern and thanked Ken for all his help that day.Â
It’s incredible the way life unfolds when it’s least expected!
